TIV, or “Total Investable Value” is a metric that measures the total amount of funds deposited into a given app via positions that are currently active & available, and remain associated with the depositing wallet’s address, with the idea that they can be claimed by that wallet in the future.
TIV differs from the traditional value metric for DeFi of TVL, or Total Value Locked, which includes ALL deposited funds in an app, regardless if the position is active or if a wallet retains a claim on the funds.
Examples of positions that are included in TIV are active pools, farms, staking, vaults, vote-escrowed vaults, vote-locked tokens, and lending positions, as they are all active and associated with the users’ wallet.
Examples of positions that do not .get counted in TIV, but traditionally are counted in TVL, would be
- deposits into bridges and mixers like Tornado Cash, as the user already withdrew the value from those contracts and does not retain a claim on their initial deposit
- Deposits in farms that have been turned off and are no longer accepting new deposits, only withdrawals
- Deposits into treasury wallets, where the user does not retain a claim
